Oct 7 2020 Badminton & Baseball

1. Attendance

2. Warm Up - 2 laps + Stretch - led by Charley.

3. Charley/Fia/ - to set up nets.

4. Charley - to review rules, serves, set up round robin teams and game. Play to break.

Summary of Rules: Badminton is a game played with two teams attempting to reach a score of twenty-one first, the team who reaches twenty-one first needs to exceed the other team by two. I.e. nineteen vs. twenty-one or fourteen vs. twenty-one. As played in doubles the out lines are ‘short’ for service and then full court for the rest of the game. When the birdie lands outside of the court the other team earns a point and serves. When a point is earned, the team must switch sides on the court (even point=right side, odd point= left side). Each team is only allowed one hit each time the birdie is on their side. Whatever method the teams use to determine who serves first is up to them (flip a coin, numbers, which side up on racquet, or a rally)

The Different Hits:

  1. Drive shot: The drive shot is a basic flat shot, directly hit over the net. It is a powerful, quick counter-attacking shot that is easy to execute. If the shot is played correctly, it will force your opponent to hit an upward return, giving you opportunities to counterattack. It is widely used in a Doubles Game as players would like to keep the shuttle low.

  1. Clear shot: The aim of the clear shot is to cause the shuttle to go up high in the air and land at your opponent's backcourt. It is commonly used when you need to buy more time for yourself to return to base before the next return. It is also strategic to use when your opponent is near to the fore court, forcing him to retract to the back to retrieve the shuttle.

  1. Drop Shot: The aim of the drop shot is to make it look like you are going for a drive shot but then use as little force as necessary to tap it over the net. It is best used when the opponents are far back or on the opposite side of the court.

  1. Smash Shot: The badminton smash is considered the most powerful shot in badminton and is usually played on the forehand. It is often difficult to return because of the pace and the downward angle of the shot, think of it as a downwards drive. It is best used when the shuttle is high in the air so that it can be angled downwards.

  1. Serves: The underhand serve is a very easy skill to learn. The birdie is dropped, and the racquet taps it up, the serve can range in height and length depending on the force of the hit and angle of the hit. It can go short over the net but also can be used to go high and long to the back of the court.

These are the basic hits for badminton that are very helpful to know and master.
